Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). It promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. Formula SAE takes students out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work experiences.
The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving.
The format of these competitions comprises of two major type of events, static events aims to test the engineering design, cost and manufacturing skills along with the key business skills of the teams. Further the dynamic events are designed to judge the cars on their speed, acceleration, handling and endurance in a series of time-trial races. Before the student built race cars are allowed to compete in the dynamic events they are taken through a series of inspections and tests to ensure on track safety and rules compliance of the vehicle. Scrutineering consists of six different types of inspections, which includes Chassis inspection, technical inspection, safety inspection, tilt test, noise test and brake test. Only the teams who are able to clear all six of these inspections are allowed to perform on track.
Internationally, as part of the Official Formula SAE Series consists of the following competitions:
- Formula SAE Michigan
- Formula SAE Lincoln
- Formula SAE Electric Nebraska
- Formula SAE Australasia
- Formula SAE Brazil
- Formula SAE Italy
- Formula Student (UK)
- Formula Student Austria
- Formula Student Germany
- Student Formula Japan
Formula Student UK
Formula Student UK is one of the world’s largest educational motorsports competitions that is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and is considered to be a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers. Now celebrating its 18th year, Formula Student UK welcomed over 3,000 students from 25 countries this year.
The competition challenges engineering students from around the globe to conceive, design and build a single-seat racing car. The cars are tested in a series of time-trial races while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills.
Formula Student Germany
Hailed as one of the toughest FSAE competitions in the world, Formula Student Germany started with the first pre-event with 11 cars and 8 teams in 2005. The first event in Hockenheimring in 2006 already saw 40 teams and cars from all over the world.
There were 71 combustions teams from 18 nations, 39 electric teams from 15 nations, 3800 participants and 600 visitors at this year’s competition. Prior to participation in Formula Student Germany, there is a quiz held for the teams which have to qualify it in order to compete.
